How long is child support paid?

A parent's obligation of child support ceases then the child reaches the age of majority, which is twenty-one (21) in Mississippi, or is otherwise emancipated prior to reaching the age of majority. Emancipation prior to reaching the age of majority occurs when a child 1) marries, 2) is incarcerated for two or more years for the commission of a felony crime, 3) joins the military on a full-time basis. The Court also has the discretion of determining that a child is emancipated prior to reaching the age of majority if the child 1) discontinues full time education (if eighteen and not disabled), 2) voluntarily moves away from their parent, establishes independent living arrangements, and becomes employed full-time, or 3) cohabits with another person without the payor’s approval.
